- Timber on a galvanised steel frame
- Sealed all six faces before hanging
- Tip-up or sectional mechanism
A wooden garage door is chosen for appearance, and it earns that choice on the right house. In Springs we fit them on the larger properties through Selcourt, Pollak Park and Casseldale, and on the older period homes where a modern steel panel would look wrong on the elevation.
Wooden garage doors we supply in Springs
- Hardwood sectional doors with the panel construction that suits the elevation.
- Timber tip-up doors on new or existing frames.
- Timber-clad steel doors where the look is wanted with less maintenance.
- Meranti and other hardwoods, selected for stability rather than only for grain.
Weight, and what it means for the rest of the door
Timber doors are heavy, and that has consequences through the whole installation. The frame has to carry it, the balance has to be rated for the finished door rather than the previous one, and the operator has to be sized on the real mass. A timber door on hardware specified for a steel one fails early and takes the hardware with it.
Timber on older Springs houses
On the period stock a timber door is often the right answer aesthetically, but the frame it is going onto may be as old as the house. We check what the subframe is fixed into before quoting, because hanging a heavy pair of leaves on an original frame that has softened is a call-back waiting to happen.
Timber and East Rand conditions
West-facing garages take hard afternoon sun, and the swing between dry winters and heavy summer storms moves timber more here than most owners expect. A door sealed on all six faces, including the top and bottom edges nobody sees, moves far less than one finished only where it shows.
Maintenance, stated honestly
A timber garage door needs recoating. On a sheltered south-facing opening that might be every three or four years; on a west-facing one in full sun it is sooner. We give the interval for your specific opening at survey, because a customer who was not told is a customer with a warped door and a fair complaint.
Timber-clad steel as the alternative
Where the look matters more than the material, a steel or insulated door with a timber-look finish gives the appearance with almost no maintenance. It costs less and it will still look right in ten years. We offer it alongside the real thing rather than instead of it.
Automating a wooden garage door
Entirely possible, with the operator sized to the finished mass and the door balanced properly first. Balance is the whole job on a heavy door; the motor should be moving a balanced door, not lifting a heavy one.
What a wooden garage door costs in Springs
More than steel, both to buy and to keep. Priced on opening size, timber, construction, finish and automation, with the maintenance expectation set out in writing.
Common questions
About wooden garage doors
Meranti is the sensible all-round choice in South Africa: stable, takes stain evenly and reasonably priced. Cedar is lighter, which matters on a wide double door, and naturally insect-resistant. Saligna is beautiful but heavy. Pine only works under a deep overhang with disciplined recoating.
Look at it once a year. If the finish has gone matt or chalky at the bottom rail or the vertical edges, sand lightly and put two coats on. North- and west-facing doors in Gauteng need it more often than sheltered doors at the coast.
Usually because the back and the end grain were never sealed. Water goes in at the unsealed edges and the board moves. We seal all six faces on the bench before the door is hung, and build the timber onto a galvanised steel frame that carries the load.
No — timber cannot curl around a barrel. A wooden door runs as a tip-up panel or as a hinged sectional door. If you have no headroom for either, a woodgrain-finish aluminium door gives the same look on a roll-up mechanism.
